FC Bayern Munich: Bitter Defeat in Champions League Semi-Final Highlights Need for Realignment

Barcelona 1999, Munich 2012 – FC Bayern has already had plenty of experience with particularly bitter defeats. The defeat in the semi-final second leg of the Champions League against Real Madrid is one of the two biggest dramas.

Only the mistake of the previously outstanding keeper Manuel Neuer before the 1-1 in the 88th minute. Then the hasty offside whistle for Matthijs de Ligt’s potential 2-2 deep in stoppage time, for which referee Szymon Marciniak even apologized afterwards. The Munich team’s anger at the referee and fate was absolutely understandable.

As incredibly bitter as the defeat was in the end, when you look at it soberly it is also well deserved. FC Bayern fought with self-sacrifice, but were inferior in the second leg for practically the entire season. As an example, the xG value of 2.92 to 0.38 was clearly in favor of Real.

As in the quarter-finals against Arsenal FC, Thomas Tuchel – due to the available player material and contrary to his actual principles – opted for a wait-and-see style of play. With dominant football worthy of Mia-san-mia, the Munich team probably wouldn’t have had a chance in either the quarter-finals or the semi-finals, which in principle should of course not be the aim. Against Arsenal, FC Bayern still benefited from the extra experience, but against Real this bonus was gone.

Despite all the sadness, this defeat should help the club in the long term. Last season, the last-minute championship title glossed over the squad problems that were already obvious at the time. After the first titleless season in eleven years, there is now no way around the long overdue realignment. Participation in the final or even winning the title might have delayed this process again.
