Details of FC Bayern’s still unsuccessful search for a coach continue to emerge. This bothers Munich’s former club boss Karl-Heinz Rummenigge. He addresses clear words to management – and provides object lessons.

Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has called on those responsible at FC Bayern to be more discreet when looking for a coach. He himself is no longer directly involved in the current topics at the record football champions, as he resigned as CEO in 2021. “However, I can only recommend becoming a little more reserved again,” said the 68-year-old in an interview with the Spanish newspaper “AS” addressed to his successors.

The Munich team has been looking for a new coach since the decision to separate from coach Thomas Tuchel at the end of the season. Recently, some preferred candidates such as Xabi Alonso (Bayer Leverkusen) and Ralf Rangnick (team boss in Austria) had canceled. A lot of information about the search for a coach was repeatedly in the media.

Rummenigge criticized this and referred to the signing of Pep Guardiola, which was successful in 2013 under himself and the then club president Uli Hoeneß. “When we signed Pep, we worked on the operation for a total of six months and nobody found out about it,” recalled Rummenigge and recommended: “You have to act strategically, but without the next move being in all the newspapers every day.”

Rummenigge calls for more continuity at FC Bayern

After a disappointing year in the Bundesliga, the Munich team wants a coach who will develop the team further. After numerous rejections, there is currently speculation about Erik ten Hag as a possible candidate. The 54-year-old Dutchman still has a contract as Manchester United coach until 2025, but has to leave his post in England early due to lack of success. United lost 4-0 at Crystal Palace on Monday evening and is in danger of missing out on participation in next year’s European Cup – the Ten Hag team had already squandered their Champions League chances.

Rummenigge said that missing the championship title was not a drama. However, he warned that the club would have to focus more on continuity again in the future. “Recently we have deviated a little from our course, both on the field and in the management level,” said the ex-professional.

“FC Bayern must regain the stability at all levels that has always distinguished them. You have to remember that people like Uli Hoeneß, Franz Beckenbauer and I held the helm of this ship for a hundred years, at least that was my feeling. It is difficult to achieve such longevity in a leadership position, but FC Bayern must return to the path of continuity.”
