Far from Done: Towers Hamburg Ready for Next Challenge After Big Upset Victory

“Far from done” – far from finished!

When Aljami Durham (25) shuffled to the team bus on Wednesday with small eyes, the Veolia Towers Hamburg star was wearing a new baseball cap with the self-confident inscription.

The evening before, the towers had caused the first big surprise in the first play-in game in the history of the Easycredit Basketball Bundesliga – and sent favorite EWE Baskets Oldenburg on vacation with a 93:81. Crazy: It was only on the way back to Hamburg that the team and coach found out where the stop-and-go journey continued: namely Thursday at the MHP Riesen Ludwigsburg (8 p.m., Dyn).

Travel stress because of surprise victory!

The team was back in the Hanseatic city at 11.30 p.m. Team manager Carina Oesting had already booked a hotel in Ludwigsburg literally “last minute”. Oesting had previously blocked the six double and eight single rooms with the Towers’ travel partner for security reasons.

After a short night at home, the team met briefly for breakfast – and set off again at 9:30 a.m. Around eight hours (635 kilometers) to the south. A training session was planned in the Giants’ Hall at 8 p.m.

“It will be about who is mentally more prepared,” says coach Benka Barloschky (36). “Both teams will be tired.” Because the giants only returned from the 69:90 defeat in Bonn around 3:30 a.m. However, you didn’t have to get back on the bus straight away afterwards.

Barloschky: “Of course we have the slight disadvantage that we still have to travel. But the team knows that from the EuroCup. We’ve already put up with these travel stresses. It’s going to be about who’s fresher in the head and who can get it done mentally?”

The biggest challenge for the giants is to fill the MHP Arena (4,129 seats) as full as possible in just one and a half days in order to take advantage of the home advantage…

Because that could be the deciding factor in the end! This season the favorite lost both games against their former favorite opponent from the north. There is also internal unrest: Since the reports that the MHP giants are not extending their contract with coach Josh King (38), the team has lost eight out of ten games!

The atmosphere at the Towers is completely different. “I see the team as totally together,” says Barloschky: “We played so closely together through this difficult start, through the ups and downs, through the EuroCup season, which was really difficult for us in terms of the results that the boys now really stand shoulder to shoulder and trust each other. We are battle-tested and have experienced every emotional state this year.”

That’s why team manager Oesting has already blocked 14 hotel rooms in Munich to be on the safe side. Because the quarter-finals start there on Saturday, the Towers would go straight there…
