Excitement Builds as European Para-Archery Championships Begin in Rome

The wait is over, the European Para-Archery Championships will start in Rome tomorrow, Monday 20 May, arriving in the capital for the second time after the 2022 edition. The delegations have arrived in Rome and today the athletes will be engaged in the official test shoots . Over 100 archers will compete tomorrow at the Multifunctional Center of the State Police in Spinaceto, while the finals will be staged in the magnificent scenery of the Archaeological Park of Ostia Antica on Friday 24 May.

THE PARTICIPANTS

There are 26 national teams participating in the European Championship and on the shooting line, accompanied by almost 90 technicians, there will be over 100 athletes from the Recurve Open, Compound Open and W1 categories – those present at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games – plus the Visually category Impaired 1 (blind) and Visually Impaired 2/3 (visually impaired). These are the countries registered: Andorra, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Finland, France, Georgia, Germany, Great Britain, Greece, Ireland, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, the Netherlands, Poland, the Czech Republic, Romania, Slovakia, Spain, Switzerland, Turkey, Hungary and Ukraine.

AZZURRI PROTAGONISTS AT THE LATEST EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP

The Italian national team comes to the event on the strength of the great successes of the last two editions. Two years ago, again in Rome, the Azzurri won the medal table for Nations, winning 14 medals (5 gold, 4 silver and 5 bronze) and on the cover were Elisabetta Mijno, in the Olympic competition, and Daniele Piran, both among the Visually Impaired European champions, with the other individual medals being won by Matteo Bonacina (silver in compound), Asia Pellizzari (bronze in W1) and Stefano Travisani (bronze in recurve). There were eight team medals with golds in the women’s Olympic with Mijno and Petrilli, in the men’s compound with Bonacina-Cancelli and in the W1 mixed team with Pellizzari-Tonon. A success repeated last year in Rotterdam, Holland, with another first place in the medal table for Nations this time with 12 medals (4 gold, 5 silver and 3 bronze) with an individual gold encore by Elisabetta Mijno and Daniele Piran and the title in the W1 of the Capitoline Maurizio Panella, while among the teams the mixed team W1 Pellizzari-Tonon won gold.

ITALY’S CALLED PEOPLE

Many of the protagonists of the last two editions have also been called up for the next European Championships in Rome, in the Olympic period the call came for Stefano Travisani (Gruppo Sportivo Paralimpico Difesa), Giuseppe Verzini (Arcieri Cormòns), Davide Bettoni (Arcieri Gonzaga), for the reigning continental champion Elisabetta Mijno (Arcieri delle Alpi), for the world champion Vincenza Petrilli (Fiamme Oro) and for Veronica Floreno (Gruppo Sportivo Paralimpico Difesa).
In the compound there is space for world champion Matteo Bonacina (Arcieri delle Alpi), Giampaolo Cancelli (Arcieri Alpignano) and Christian Seneca (Kosmos Rovereto) together with Maria Andrea Virgilio (Fiamme Azzurre), Eleonora Sarti (Gruppo Sportivo Paralimpico Difesa) and Giulia Pesci (Paralympic Defense Sports Group).
Five will be the Italians from W1, the reigning European champion Maurizio Panella (Gruppo Sportivo Paralimpico Difesa), Paolo Tonon (Arcieri Del Castello), Francesco Tomaselli (Arcieri Pol. Solese), Asia Pellizzari (Fiamme Oro) and Daila Dameno (Polisportiva Disabili Valcamonica).
Among the Visually Impaired 1 called up is the former world champion Matteo Panariello (Arcieri Livornesi), while among the VI 2/3 Daniele Piran (Arco Club Bolzano Vicentino) will defend his double consecutive European title, alongside Giovanni Maria Vaccaro ( Dyamond Archery Palermo).

THE PROGRAM

The competition program includes the official practice shots for today, Sunday 19 May. On Monday 20th the start of the 72 ranking arrows that establish the scoreboard for the direct clashes and on Tuesday 21st the competition will get even more lively with the individual preliminaries up to the semi-finals. On Wednesday 22nd there will be space for the team (doubles) and mixed team preliminaries, in addition to the ranking round and the Visually Impaired preliminaries. All the finals for bronze will be held on Thursday 23 May, while on Friday 24 May the competition location will change: the closing of the event with the assignment of the European titles will take place in the archaeological site of Ostia Antica: in the morning, from 10:00 am , the finals for the individual continental gold and in the afternoon, from 3.00 pm, the team finals, with the closing ceremony scheduled for 5.30 pm.

EUROPEANS ON TV AND STREAMING

The individual finals on Friday 24 May from the Archaeological Park of Ostia Antica will be broadcast live on Rai Play from 11:00 to 12:30. Results, news and photographs will be published on the social channels and on the website of the Italian Archery Federation and World Archery Europe.
