European Football Championship 2024: Hummels and Goretzka not in the European Championship squad – Anton and Henrichs included

The German Football Association (DFB) has announced its provisional squad for the European Football Championship from June 14th to July 14th in Germany. In addition to the players named in a PR campaign by the DFB in recent days, nine other professionals have been nominated for the home European Championship: Benjamin Henrichs, Maximilian Beier, Alexander Nübel, Waldemar Anton, Toni Kroos, Thomas Müller, Jamal Musiala, Marc-André ter Stegen and Oliver Baumann.

With 27 nominees, the DFB currently has one player too many in the squad. The final squad may contain a maximum of 26 players and must be reported to UEFA by midnight on June 7th. The player who is being cut is said to be an outfield player because Julian Nagelsmann wants to have four goalkeepers in the squad.

The Champions League finalists from BVB were not nominated for the European Championship: Julian Brandt, Mats Hummels and Emre Can. Leon Goretzka from FC Bayern Munich is also missing from the DFB squad. All four players have recently been a frequent member of the international squad.

Rejections to Hummels and Goretzka “not nice”

“It’s not nice to tell a player that he won’t be at a home European Championship. Of course, such conversations are emotional,” said Nagelsmann about the rejections of Hummels or Goretzka, for example. Hummels and Goretzka also “threw everything into being there”.

A “decisive point” for him as a coach was “that every player has his character, his traits.” Ultimately, his job is to “put the right ones together.”

European Championship preparations begin at the end of May

The national coach gathered the DFB squad on May 26th in the small town of Blankenhain in Thuringia. The players of the Champions League finalists Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund will miss the first part of the European Championship preparations. On June 3rd, the national team will play a test match in Nuremberg against Ukraine, which has also qualified for the European Championships. The European Championship dress rehearsal follows four days later in Mönchengladbach against Greece.
