Activists from the environmentalist group “Last Generation” stopped two matches of the Rome tournament by returning to the pitch.

Two matches of the Rome tennis tournament were stopped on Monday by the entry onto the field of environmental activists from the “Last Generation” group, AFP noted.

The match counting for the round of 16 of the women’s tournament between the American Madison Keys and the Romanian Sorana Cirstea was stopped when the score was 6-2, 3-1 for Keys when two environmental activists entered one of the main courts of the Foro Italico, the Pietrangeli.

Dressed in orange vests, they stood in the center of the field, threw a liquid substance on the court and confetti, before being evacuated by the tournament security service.

On a neighboring court, N.12, where a match in the men’s doubles tournament was being played, two activists also entered the court. They also threw a liquid substance and confetti onto the clay, then sat next to the net. However, they were not escorted off the field and were still on the court at 12:30 p.m. (10:30 a.m. GMT). While waiting for the police to arrive, the stands were evacuated.

The organization “Last Generation” began carrying out non-violent actions in Italy in 2022 around the time of the legislative elections, calling on politicians of all stripes to make climate one of their priorities.

Last February, two members of this group pasted photos of the damage caused by climate change on the protective glass of Botticelli’s masterpiece “The Birth of Venus”, exhibited at the Uffizi Museum in Florence.

And in March, three “Last Generation” environmental activists briefly interrupted the Rome marathon before being arrested and taken to the police station.
