Havana.- THE FIRST arrows from the 2024 Elite Archery Championship will make targets today in the central province of Sancti Spíritus, where representatives from 10 territories arrived.
The competition will begin with the double lap at 70 meters for women in the recurve and compound specialties. Beyond the favorites, we will have to follow the performance of Leydis Posada from the capital, who aims to reach the 530 points required to qualify for the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games.
The student of former goalkeeper Juan Carlos Stevens has improved her records in each presentation of her short career in this sport, bringing her personal limit to 487 units.
“Leydis has shown that he can continue improving and we believe that here he could achieve the minimum mark for him to attend his first Paralympic games,” he told JIT the head of the coaches Vladimir Quintas, who offered other details about the national tournament.
The person in charge of the women’s recurve bow squad highlighted that the competition will serve to evaluate the representatives of the provinces that are not members of the national preselection, with the aim of updating their roster for the next Olympic cycle.
Among the men, the focus of attention will be on Hugo Franco from Pinar del Río, captain of the Cuban recurve squad, who next June will exhaust his chances of being included in the individual competition at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
After the failed attempts in the continental tournament last April, its presence in the qualifying competition in the Turkish city of Antalya will be the last opportunity for Cuba to be represented at the Paris event.
Regarding other details of the national tournament, Quintas explained that the double round at 70 meters for the men was scheduled for Thursday and then the groups will be formed for the matches in each sex.
«To promote a greater number of matches, we designed a different system than the one that prevails in international events. With the 16 best from the double lap at 70 meters we will form four groups. Each one will have four members who will face each other,” he explained before specifying that the leaders will advance to the semifinals.
“This stage will be direct elimination and the winners will discuss the gold medals in each sex,” added the coach.
Medals will also be distributed in the competition for mixed teams, an event that will have all its duels on Saturday. The distribution of the individual awards was set for a day later.
