Eagles Start Strong: Pitching Staff Shines in Opening Weekend

During their first outing, the Eagles were treated to a first quality start from their favorite gunner Osman Gutierrez. Allowing only crumbs during the five innings he pitched, Gutierrez helped his team build a three-run lead. Five relievers then took turns on the mound to secure the 5-1 victory.

On Sunday, the two teams played a seven-round doubleheader. During the first duel, it was the pitchers who stood out in a defensive battle won 2 to 0 by the Miners. In the defeat, Trois-Rivières gunner Tucker Smith did well in his five innings of work, allowing only four hits.

In the last part of the weekend, the Mauricie representatives experienced a thunderous second round on offense as they produced four points. The three-run homer signed by Luis Curbelo did a lot of damage.

On the mound, pitcher Jessen Therrien was brilliant with only five hits allowed then Brendan Bell and Michell Miliano closed the books in relief to ensure a 4-0 victory for the Eagles.

“We had several positive things. Our team played really well with good defensive performances and from our pitchers. Winning two of the first three matches satisfies me as a manager. We seem to have a solid group of guys,” said Eagles manager Matthew Rusch.

Problematic on multiple occasions last year, the pitching staff was one of the main reasons behind this successful first weekend. With 16 hits and three runs allowed, there is reason to rub our hands in the case of the Trois-Rivières.

“We are really happy with how the season has started. Gutierrez, who is our ace, threw a very good duel on Friday. He gave us time to score points. He was in control throughout the game and led our pitching staff by example. In the second encounter, Smith was solid, but he didn’t have the support of the attack and we made a mistake behind him. In the third game, Jesen Therrien was incredible. He fooled opposing hitters with his fastballs and curves. He had eight swing outs. Our succession was splendid with only one race in three clashes. Our pitching staff looks really improved.”

Local opening from Friday

After their trip to the home of the Miners, the Eagles headed to New York State where they will have to play a series of three games from Tuesday to Thursday against the Boulders. Rusch expects this club to be solid with dangerous hitters.

“They also have a good pitching staff. I think it will be an intense series. A bit like our first series, the first team to blink will make a mistake that could cost the match. We want to play tight and efficient defensively. We want to limit errors as much as possible.”

They will then quickly return to Mauricie to take part in their opening weekend at Stade Quillorama. They will host the New England Knockouts for the occasion from Friday to Sunday.

“We hope to have a great atmosphere, that fans will come to see our good team. All the guys are excited to be home to play these matches in front of our spectators. We can’t wait to play at home and sleep in our beds.”
