MADRIDIt’s not even a year since the Barcelona Supercomputing Center’s MareNostrum 5 landed in the Catalan capital and plans are already underway to double its computing capacity by 2025. Although this is an ambitious goal, all you have to do is put highlights how important artificial intelligence (AI) will be in the future, or at least that’s how governments foresee it. This key infrastructure for AI currently has a computing or processing capacity of up to 314,000 trillion operations per second (314 petaflops), a number that will scale to over 450,000 trillion operations per second (450 petaflops) next year. , as contained in the National Strategy for Artificial Intelligence 2024 of the Spanish government approved this Tuesday. To make this possible, an additional investment of between 55 and 90 million euros is planned, according to the same strategy.

To give an example, the current capacity of the MareNostrum 5 means that it takes an hour to do the calculations that a mid-high-end laptop would take 46 years to do. Compared to the capacity of high-end notebooks alone, the MareNostrum 5 has the power of 380,000 notebooks at once.
“Although Spain has a good starting point in supercomputing, especially after the commissioning of MareNostrum 5, its capacity will be strengthened, with the aim that this supercomputer will have an additional upgrade in just a few months. The the objective is that the acquisition of this new cluster specialized in AI can enter into operation in 2025 and incorporate the latest technologies”, according to the document approved by the Spanish government and piloted by the Ministry of Digital Transformation, under the baton of José Luis Escrivá (PSOE). In the eyes of the Spanish government, the AI Strategy 2024 “starts from the reality that supercomputing is a fundamental pillar for the advancement of artificial intelligence”. With the increase in capacity, however, the aim is not only to give wings to the scientific sector and, therefore, to research, but also to industry. In fact, the plan approved by the executive specifically includes the “commitment to dedicate 20% of MareNostrum 5’s capacity to industry.”
1.5 billion in two years
This measure, however, is only one of those that are part of the axis of strengthening the capacities for the development of artificial intelligence in Spain and that together with the “facility to implement AI in the public and private sector “, as well as “promoting a transparent, ethical and humanistic AI” make up the strategy approved by the Spanish executive and which foresees an investment of up to 1.5 billion euros between this 2024 and 2025. The plan includes developing a new regulatory framework for data processing centers, the creation of language models in Spanish and also in the other languages of the State or promoting talent and training.
