Düsseldorf Athletes Honored for Outstanding Achievements in 2023

A total of 15 people were awarded a badge of honor for their services to Düsseldorf sport

Athletes from Düsseldorf clubs celebrated great successes in the pre-Olympic year. Mayor Dr. Stephan Keller honored the successful athletes on Thursday, May 2nd, at a reception in the athletics hall of the Arena Sports Park for national and international titles 2023 in Olympic and non-Olympic sports of all classes.

113 people were honored for titles at world, European and German championships as well as international tournaments in a total of 22 sports, 17 of which were Olympic and five non-Olympic.

Mayor Dr. Stephan Keller: “With outstanding successes, Düsseldorf athletes have once again impressively demonstrated their great national and international class in 2023. These successes are also a great template for the current super sports year of 2024 with the Summer Olympics and Paralympic Games in Paris, where hopefully numerous athletes from the sports city of Düsseldorf will be there again. I keep my fingers crossed that all of Düsseldorf’s Olympic dreams will come true.”

Great success with the team and in individual sports
Borussia Düsseldorf remains the most successful Düsseldorf club. Timo Boll and Kay Stumper became vice-European champions with the team. Together with Anton Källberg, Dan Qiu and Sharat Kamal Achanta they became German team champions in the table tennis Bundesliga. Sandra Mikolaschek, Valentin Baus and Thomas Schmidberger became European champions and German champions in wheelchair table tennis in various categories. The young talent at Borussia is also very successful. Eireen Kalaitzidou reached 5th place at the World Championships with the national team and became vice-European champion with the U19 national team.

There were further successes in team sports with the women’s team from the Düsseldorf Hockey Club, which became German champions in indoor hockey. Fortuna Düsseldorf once again celebrated the German championship title in amputee football. And the American Football Club Düsseldorf 1978 – “The Panthers” also became German champions with the junior team.

Chelsea Roussikan from the Rheintreu water sports club became U23 world champion and vice-European champion in the kayak single over 200 meters. Katherina Jacob from the Rheinstadion Tennis Club became vice world champion in women’s doubles and mixed doubles in the age group (AK) 30.

In the senior class of table tennis, Marianne Blasberg from the Friedrichstädter Gymnastics Club has been on the road to success for many years. Most recently, she won gold in doubles, silver in singles and mixed doubles at the World Championships in the 85 age group and became European champion in singles and doubles. Marianne Blasberg recently celebrated her 90th birthday.
