Dragovic announces return to Austria

Long-time ÖFB team player Aleksandar Dragovic is leaving Red Star Belgrade after three years and three championship titles. The club confirmed this on Friday in an Instagram post, which Dragovic also shared.

“It is very difficult for me, but I have made the decision to return to Austria in consultation with my family,” the 33-year-old was quoted as saying in the statement. However, according to his press management, a new club has not yet been decided.

In the past, Dragovic had repeatedly been linked with Austria Vienna – the club where he grew up. Financially, however, the 100-time ÖFB international had been playing in a different league in recent years.

Nine championship titles as a legionnaire

The central defender has won nine championship titles abroad so far – four with FC Basel, two with Dynamo Kyiv and three with Red Star. He also played for Bayer Leverkusen and Leicester City.

According to the traditional club, the current captain will play his last game in the Red Star jersey on Sunday in the last league round against local rivals FK Cukaricki. Dragovic announced his decision to leave Red Star when his contract expires in the summer to the club management in a “friendly meeting” on Friday.

Dragovic played his last international match to date in March 2022 against Scotland (2:2). It was the farewell game of team boss Franco Foda. Under his successor Ralf Rangnick, the veteran was no longer able to play in the ÖFB selection.
