Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s Resilience Pays Off as Everton Secure Premier League Safety

Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin never stopped believing he would recapture his goalscoring form.

The England international, 27, went 18 Premier League games without scoring earlier this season, a run which contributed to Everton’s battle to avoid relegation.

A goal against Newcastle United last month stopped the rot, however, with Sean Dyche’s side going on to secure their safety with three consecutive wins.

Calvert-Lewin scored for a fourth time in five games in the draw at Luton Town on Friday night and he insists he never questioned whether he would find his scoring feet once more.

“I always believe I’m going to score goals. I went through a long, difficult period without scoring so it can play on your mind a bit, but you just have to keep believing that the longer you go without scoring, the closer you are to scoring.

“You have to keep believing that your next chance is the one that’s going to go in and that happened for me at Newcastle with the penalty. I’m on a good run now.”

Everton have endured another rollercoaster season including further points deductions from the Premier League for profitability and sustainability rules (PSR) breaches.

But with two games remaining the squad — including Calvert-Lewin — prepare for life in the top flight again next term.

“It’s had its ups and downs,” he said. “Standing here now in the Premier League for next season and scoring goals, it feels good.

“If you’d asked me where I wanted to be at this stage, I’d have said that, despite not scoring in the middle of the season for a while. That’s just the way it goes at times. Things have gone against us and it’s felt like everyone has been against us.

“We’ve had to stick together as a group. We’ve had points deducted and even putting these three games on TV, expecting us to be in a relegation scrap. Unfortunately for everyone we weren’t. Tonight we could go with freedom and enjoy it.”
