Disappointing Performance but Festive Celebrations: PSG’s End of Season Show at Parc des Princes

Paris Saint-Germain had promised an “exceptional show” before the meeting. The “Parisians and champions show”, in the vein of the shows on the Parisian stages. The leaders surely had not anticipated such a disappointing collective performance on the pitch (1-3 defeat against Toulouse) before starting the festivities. This inevitably made the atmosphere less joyful, slightly stretching the communion between the team and its public at the final whistle.

However, the Parc des Princes was loud during the match, at least at times, to celebrate the last of the season at home. The stadium went dark after the match, simply greeting the players who came to the bottom of the stands for a few seconds, with “We are the champions” coming down from Virage Auteuil. The show was elsewhere.

While the Parisians returned to the locker room to prepare for the party, while Michel Montana made a moving announcement to the public before returning his speaker’s costume after thirty years at the stadium microphone, around a hundred technicians were busy preparing a pitch that had become a open-air scene.

Sergio Rico came with his teammates

Thirty minutes after the end of the meeting, everything was ready for sound and light entertainment, under the musical direction of composer and conductor Thomas Roussel. Each of the fifty titles in the history of PSG was entitled to its moment of celebration.

Despite the fairly long time between the end of the match and the start of the ceremony, the supporters did not desert the stands, ready to take out their phones so as not to miss anything of what they were going to experience. The rest, Paris knows how to do and has accustomed us, each year, to trying to raise the bar to celebrate its trophies at the Park, failing to be able to celebrate them in town.

Once again, the leaders did not skimp on resources and even chose to sponsor the event. Accompanied by the music of the orchestra installed in the central circle, a video on a giant overhead projector installed in the middle of the lawn retraced the best moments of the season.

The musicians involved the Parisian venue, since the most famous songs of the Collectif Ultras Paris were played in association with the Auteuil turn. Mamadou Sakho and Jérémy Ménez, two former French champions with PSG, then brought the trophy to the stage, preceding their successors.

Like last year, no player by player call on the microphone, but by position. As at the class council, there were acclaimed players (Vitinha, Navas, Dembélé, Mbappé…) and others booed (Kurzawa, Ruiz, Soler…). Sergio Rico, who has not played all season after his horse fall a year ago, came with his teammates for the occasion.

Farewells, then the last thrill of the season at the Park, Captain Marquinhos lifting the Hexagoal, with Michel Montana at his side. But not Nasser al-Khelaïfi, absent from the podium contrary to his habits.
