The women of VfL Wolfsburg defeat FC Bayern and win the DFB Cup. A goalkeeper error leads to the defeat of Munich, who miss out on the double.

VfL Wolfsburg remains the benchmark in the women’s DFB Cup. Thanks primarily to a convincing first half, the club won the cup for the tenth time in a row and at the same time let champions FC Bayern Munich’s double dream collapse. Jule Brand (14th minute) and Dominique Janssen (40th) scored for VfL, who won the 50th game in a row in their favorite competition, to make it 2-0 (2-0) in the Cologne stadium, which was sold out with 44,400 spectators. The Bayern footballers, who were slightly favored in advance, have to wait for their second cup title after 2012.

In front of an atmospheric backdrop and under the eyes of Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and DFB President Bernd Neuendorf, in the end everything was as it had always been since 2015: The silver trophy went to Wolfsburg, even though VfL coach Tommy Stroot had to deal with the failure in the Champions League -Qualification and the missed championship had to moderate a difficult season.

However, VfL easily put aside the bigger and smaller concerns of this round in the final and appeared fresh and bold. Wolfsburg’s first scream of goal came in the opening quarter of an hour. Brand took a powerful shot from 17 meters and the ball landed just in front of Bayern’s goalkeeper Mala Grohs, who reached into space and therefore looked quite unfortunate.

Bayern disappoints on offense

However, it was not because of the keeper, who enabled FC Bayern to reach the final by saving three penalties in the semi-final against Eintracht Frankfurt, that the champions lost a cup final against VfL, as they did in 2018. Especially in the first half, the Munich team didn’t perform at all. The game seemed too sedate at the top, and defensively the she-wolves’ bites often hurt.

Janssen’s 2-0 header from a corner taken by former international Svenja Huth was well deserved, as only Wolfsburg had big chances. Driven by the future Munich player Lena Oberdorf, VfL played forward in a straight line and at high speed, found many gaps, but did not use all of them to score. Among other things, Oberdorf himself failed twice because of Groh’s strong parrying.

Only Giulia Gwinn provided a splash of color for the Munich team when she angrily slammed the ball onto the grass after a throw-in decision in favor of the Wolfsburg team and received a yellow card. “Take Bayern’s Lederhosen off,” the VfL fans sang happily shortly before half-time.

Bavaria cannot answer

The Bayern fans only saw their team’s first great chance after just under an hour when Lea Schüller was denied by her national team colleague Merle Frohms, who reacted strongly after Klara Bühl’s corner. Bühl’s low shot that followed a little later also deflected it towards the corner.

Despite an improved performance in the second half, the Munich team still lacked the means in the final phase to pose a serious threat to the Wolfsburg team, who were now more defensively positioned. VfL hardly did anything offensively, but their 50th success in a row in cup competition was no longer in danger. It was the eleventh title overall for the record cup winner.
