Demi Vollering wins the Vuelta, Juliette Labous and Évita Muzic in the top 5 overall

Logical victory for the boss of the peloton. The Dutchwoman Demi Vollering (Team SD Worx-Protime) won her first Tour of Spain on Sunday, winning her second stage of the week, in Valdesqui Madrid. Frenchwoman Évita Muzic (FDJ-Suez), winner of the 6th stage, limited the damage by finishing 2nd, 29 seconds behind the Dutch champion, and climbed one place overall, finishing 5th. They are therefore two Tricolores to occupy the top 5 since Juliette Labous (Team dsm-firmenich PostNL) finishes 4th.

The coronation therefore goes to Vollering, largely dominant overall and who had a 52-second lead over Elisa Longo Borghini before the last stage. An 8th and final stage of this 10th edition of the Women’s Vuelta which included an arrival in Valdesqui Madrid on a very short (89.5 kilometres) but difficult route, including a positive altitude difference of 2,162 meters.

Vollering makes the difference in the final ascent

It was also on the last slope of the day that the Dutchwoman made everyone agree to win alone and therefore validate her first place in the general classification. She won her first Vuelta, at the age of 27, having finished 3rd in 2022 and 2nd in 2023, behind Annemiek van Vleuten. She also won the Tour de France in 2023.

Second overall before the start of this last stage, the Italian Elisa Longo Borghini (Lidl-Trek) was unable to follow Vollering’s acceleration 6.6 kilometers from the finish and therefore lost a place overall . The winner of the Tour of Flanders finished 3rd. Riejanne Markus (Team Visma-Lease a Bike) is 2nd, 1’49” behind Vollering.
