Deion Sanders Continues to Stir Controversy with Bold Claims About Son’s NFL Draft Stock

The fallout from a recent story about Colorado head coach Deion Sanders’ unique approach to coaching and roster building is continuing.

Responding to a fan on X who called out Shedeur Sanders for acting “like he the coldest out here then put up a 4-8 season,” Deion said his son will be a top-five pick in the NFL draft before asking the fan, “Where yo son going?”

Shedeur called former Colorado teammate Xavier Smith, who entered the transfer portal, “mid” in response to a story from The Athletic’s Max Olson about the 53 scholarship players who left the Buffaloes from the time Deion was hired as head coach in December 2022 and the end of spring practices last year.

Deion’s confidence has served him well dating back to when he was a player. It helped him lead a swift turnaround at Jackson State, where he went 27-6 in three seasons.

The first test against FBS competition did nothing to humble Prime Time, despite the Buffaloes’ 4-8 record in 2023. They were a sensation with three consecutive wins to start last season, highlighted by a 45-42 win over TCU at Amon G. Carter Stadium.

Things will be even more interesting in 2024 for Colorado. The program is returning to the Big 12 after spending the past 12 years in the Pac-12. Arizona, Arizona State and Utah are following the Buffaloes to their new conference, which is losing Oklahoma and Texas to the SEC.

Per 247Sports’ composite rankingsColorado ranks 15th out of 16 Big 12 teams in recruiting and has the fewest incoming freshmen in the conference (12).

The team is cleaning up in the transfer portal with the sixth-ranked class in the country and 34 incoming players.

Shedeur will be the engine driving the offense, just as he was last season. The 22-year-old threw for 3,230 yards, 27 touchdowns, three interceptions and completed 69.3 percent of his attempts in 11 games during the 2023 campaign.

Going into the 2024 season, Deion might be slightly overestimating his son’s draft stock. B/R’s NFL scouting department has Shedeur coming off the board as the third quarterback, behind Georgia’s Carson Beck and Notre Dame’s Riley Leonard, with the 14th pick to the Pittsburgh Steelers in a way-too-early 2025 mock draft.

Things are certainly going to shift once the season begins and players are going head to head with each other. One year ago, no one would have predicted Jayden Daniels was going to be the No. 2 overall pick.

At least right now, though, it doesn’t look like Shedeur is locked in as a top-five pick.
