Defying the Odds: Daniil Medvedev’s Unexpected Success on Clay Continues in Rome

Long allergic to clay, it is nevertheless in the shoes of a favorite that Daniil Medvedev competes in the Masters 1000 in Rome. Last year, the world number four surprised everyone by winning his first title on clay, beating Holger Rune in Rome (7−5, 7–5).

He will try for the first time to succeed in retaining a title in two consecutive seasons. At a press conference, he returned to the brand new relationship he has with ocher.

« It’s fantastic. I’ve seen photos of me with the cup, in the gallery of champions, and it’s really beautiful. I changed my vision on clay. In Monte‐Carlo, I was only able to play two matches, but in Madrid, I played well and I felt good. Of course I’m sorry for how it happened, but I’m not disappointed, getting injured and losing is part of sport, but now I have my chance. On clay I can get great results without being as surprised as last year. »
