Which mode is played?

The winner is determined by playing a home and away match. As in the European Cup, the number of away goals is no longer decisive if the scores are tied. There is also no third deciding match, as there used to be. If the scores and points are tied, the second leg goes into extra time and then a penalty shootout.

First or second division team – who has prevailed more often?

In 25 decisive duels between first and second division teams – ten of which took place between 1982 and 1991 – the second division teams have only been able to prevail six times. In the past twelve years, this has only been achieved twice: in 2019 Union Berlin (against VfB Stuttgart) and in 2012 Fortuna Düsseldorf (against Hertha BSC).

The trend is completely different in the games between second and third division teams: in 15 duels so far, the lower-class teams from the third division have prevailed eleven times.
