Czech Republic – Denmark | HOCKEY ONLINE: Czechs in the role of favourites

As part of competitive matches, the Czechs failed to beat the Danes in regular time five times in a row. The last time they did it was at the 2012 World Cup, when they won 2-0 with goals from Hemský and Tenkrát. Tomáš Plekanec and Petr Nedvěd, for example, played an important role on the ice at the time, who now play somewhat different roles in the national team.

The next three meetings at the world championships have always ended in a draw after 60 minutes, and the worst experience is the most recent. At the Olympic tournament in Beijing two years ago, the Czechs lost to the Danes 1:2. This defeat deprived the national team of first, and eventually second place in the group.

The current national team led by Radim Rulík is not having a bad start to the domestic championship. After two wins, she lost to strong Switzerland on raids. However, if there is anything that worries hockey players, it is productivity. Especially in duels with stronger opponents. In 130 minutes against the Finns and the Swiss, only Matěj Stránský managed to score a goal in a power play.

WC in hockey 2024

The 87th edition of the Ice Hockey World Championship takes place from 10 to 26 May 2024 in the Czech Republic, the tournament is hosted by the cities of Prague and Ostrava.

The Danes immediately calmed down with a convincing 5:1 victory over Austria. However, the same ratio was not enough a day later against Canada, which was not an opponent with which the Northerners should collect points. The defeat against Norway on Tuesday was far more painful for the Danes. Mikael Gath’s men are now three points behind the Czech Republic, and if they still want to enter the fight for promotion, they must win on Wednesday.

The Nordic derby with Norway did not go well for the Danes, moreover, they did not score a goal and, unlike the Czech team, they do not have enough rest before the mutual duel. “We outplayed the Norwegians in the third period, but that was not enough. We have to play the full sixty minutes,” lamented striker Patrick Russell. “We have to play better against the Czechs. They will have the support of the audience, but maybe we will spoil the celebration,” believes the 31-year-old forward.
