A year after his brother Aurélien, Valentin Paret-Peintre won a stage of the Giro, this Tuesday at Bocca della Selva, ahead of Romain Bardet. The Decathlon-AGR2 La Mondiale runner thus won his very first professional victory, at the age of 23. Tadej Pogacar, not worried during this mountain stage, retains the pink jersey.

What a great day for French cycling! Valentin Paret-Peintre and Romain Bardet gave France a double on the 10th stage of the Giro! At 23, the Decathlon-AG2R La Mondiale runner won the very first victory of his career, at the end of a magnificently mastered day. A year after his brother Aurélien, who also finished fifth in this stage and was also able to raise his arm at the finish line, the native of Annemasse also won a stage of the Giro. He showed himself to be the strongest and smartest of the 28 riders present in today’s breakaway, the big names not having decided to join the fight for stage victory this Tuesday. While numerous attacks had animated the start of the stage, Alessandro De Marchi (Jayco Alula), Quinten Hermans (Alpecin-Deceuninck) and Simon Clarke (Israel-Premier Tech) ended up forming the first real breakaway of the day. But on this very bumpy course where most of the riders wanted to ride in front, a group of 25 joined them just before the ascent of Camposauro (2nd category), halfway through the race, with riders like Romain Bardet, Julian Alaphilippe, Tobias Foss, the Paret-Peintre brothers, Esteban Chaves, Filippo Zana, Jan Tratnik or Juan Pedro Lopez.

Bardet two minutes from the podium

This group lost elements over the kilometers, starting with Julian Alaphilippe, who got closer to the medical car then got up. The former double world champion confided after the finish that he had not planned to be in front this Tuesday, and that he did not have good feelings. 32 kilometers from the finish, Jan Tratnik went solo, and only Romain Bardet, Valentin Paret-Peintre, Marco Frigo and Andrea Bagioli managed to stay less than a minute from the Slovenian. The French then let go of the Italians, and Paret-Peintre ended up letting go of Bardet and joining then overtaking Tratnik, three kilometers from the line. Victory beckoned to him and the young Frenchman didn’t give up, and 371 days after his brother, he took on a stage of the Giro! Romain Bardet did not manage to keep up with his pace, and even if he missed a great opportunity to achieve the eleventh victory of his career, he is making a nice comeback in the general classification. Because in the top peloton, no one moved, even if the Bahrain Victorious and Ineos Grenadiers teams tried to set a pace at the end of the stage. Bardet gained seven places and found himself seventh, 4’57 behind Tadej Pogacar, who had an uneventful day, and above all 2’01 from the podium. On Wednesday, the stage will begin at altitude, with a 3rd category climb, before finishing by the sea.
