The Cuban Iván Silva finished this Wednesday in seventh place in the 90 kilogram division, during the fourth date of the World Judo Championships held in the city of Abu Dhabi, in the United Arab Emirates.

The runner-up of the Baku 2018 edition, who was left without an opponent in the initial round, had a good start to the competition, beating the Argentine Mariano Coto by ippon, in just 27 seconds of combat, reports the sports portal Jit.

In his next presentation he defeated the Frenchman Mathieu by waza-ari, and then lost by waza-ari-awasete-ippon against the Serbian Nemanja Majdov, multi-world medalist and champion in Budapest 2017, the publication states.

That outcome sent him to the repechage phase, in which the Cuban failed to overcome the Italian Christian Parlati, who projected him with 30 seconds left in the fight to win by ippon.

In this way, the representative of the island said goodbye to the tournament, but contributed the points with which Cuba rose to 26th place in the ranking that groups the 107 participating nations.

This Thursday the actions in the individual competitions will end and the Cuban army will return to action through the world champions Idalys Ortiz (+78 kg) and Andy Granda (+100 kg), the last hopes of adding medals in the event.

A day later the mixed team tournament is scheduled, with events at 73, 90 and over 90 kg for men and 57, 70 and over 70 kg for women. Cuba will not take part in that call.

In addition to Silva, only Maylín del Toro achieved two successes in the tournament, achieved this Tuesday against the Brazilian Ketleyn Quadros and the Cuban competing for Romania, Amanda Zuaznabar.

The rest of the team members have not had notable performances so far. Jonathan Charón, competitor in the 60 kilograms, said goodbye with a win and a setback, while Idelannis Carbonell (52 kg) and Orlando Polanco (66 kg) lost in their initial presentations.

In these fights, the Cuban judokas seek to add the greatest number of points to the ranking that will define the places by division for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Granda appears as the best placed -fifth in his weight-, while Silva occupies the eighth seat and Idalys 20th.
