Coparmex blames the government for the blackouts for preventing investment – El Sol de México

The Employers’ Confederation of the Mexican Republic (Coparmex) pointed out that the energy crisis, characterized by blackouts in several states of the country, are the result of political decisions that did not allow investment in the electricity sector.

In a statement, the organization indicated that the lack of investment in energy infrastructure, the absence of promotion of renewable energies and the lack of collaboration between the public and private sectors are affecting the country’s economic dynamism.

“We consider that the main problem is not the increase in energy demand, but the lack of new supply of generation power plants, coupled with the low investment in transformation and transmission capacity by the CFE; situations that put questioning the reliability of the National Electrical System,” said Coparmex.

Citing the National Electrical System Development Program (Prodesen), Coparmex pointed out that of the 232 projects instructed by the Ministry of Energy (SENER), the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) has only carried out nine.

The objective of Proseden is to reduce the costs of providing electrical service, promote the efficient expansion of energy generation and ensure the quality, reliability, continuity and security of the network.

Last night, the National Energy Control Center (Cenace) reported that 1,668 megawatts of energy generation were unavailable, that is, 3.3 percent of the system’s maximum demand.

This established an alert and when this level was not recovered, a state of emergency was issued, a situation that puts the electricity supply at risk in certain areas of the country, Coparmex assured.

This afternoon, Cenace declared a new operational state of alert and announced that as of 2:46 p.m., the necessary operational measures were taken to address this situation.

The statement coincided with the warnings of specialists in the electricity sector, who pointed out that if high temperatures persist, the demand for electrical energy will increase and, due to the lack of sufficient supply, more blackouts will be recorded in the country.

Given this, Coparmex called on the Energy Regulatory Commission (CRE) and Cenace to allow the integration of new power plants, mainly from the business sector.

“We ask the authorities to start dialogue tables as soon as possible to overcome the challenge of having a reliable National Electrical System… If immediate measures are not taken, the lack of availability of clean and affordable energy would become a factor that inhibits the decisions of investment,” said Coparmex.

In addition, he stressed the need to guarantee fair and transparent competition in the electricity sector, allowing investments from the business sector to complement those of the CFE and contribute to creating a clean and affordable energy supply in Mexico.
