Controversy as Alireza Jahanbakhsh walks in early on Santiago Giménez’s penalty goal

Alireza Jahanbakhsh walked in far too early on Santiago Giménez’s striking penalty in the match between Feyenoord and PEC Zwolle. Yet referee Marc Nagtegaal did not disallow the goal.

Giménez took the penalty in minute 67 with his first ball contact of the match. He passed goalkeeper Jasper Schendelaar. Images from ESPN showed that Jahanbakhsh had already walked far into the penalty area when Giménez hit the ball, but referee Nagtegaal did not notice this.

“Jahanbakhsh can be seen in the background, who is far too eager. But because it is a goal, as we understand from the fourth man, the VAR is not allowed to intervene. Because Nagtegaal did not see it,” says commentator Michiel Teeling.

“If he had observed it, it would have been a different story. Then the penalty should probably have been taken again,” said Teeling. “In any case, it is not very useful of Jahanbakhsh, but there are no consequences for Feyenoord.”
