Uli Hoeneß made harsh accusations against coach Thomas Tuchel. Was the Bayern patron right? A comparison with Julian Nagelsmann sheds light on the matter.
Munich – Shortly before the semi-finals of the Champions League against Real Madrid, there is a thick atmosphere at FC Bayern. Club patron Uli Hoeneß made people sit up and take notice with his frontal attack on coach Thomas Tuchel. The honorary president faced strong headwinds from many quarters. But is Hoeneß possibly right with his statements? A cruel comparison with predecessor Julian Nagelsmann makes Tuchel appear in a bad light.
Who is right? Hoeneß and Tuchel publicly in a clinch
“He doesn’t think he can improve on Davies, Pavlović or Musiala. If it doesn’t work, you should buy another one. I think you should work hard on them and give them self-confidence,” was Hoeneß’ criticism of Tuchel on one HE DOESevent last Friday. The Bayern coach didn’t want to let the gossip sit on him and just a day later, Tuchel made serious allegations against Hoeneß.
It should be clear that the timing of the criticism is bad shortly before the all-important CL clash against Real Madrid. However, opinions could differ when it comes to content.

Was Hoeneß right? Cruel Nagelsmann comparison makes Tuchel appear in a bad light
At Pavlovic it says in the Sports picture, according to Hoeneß, Tuchel was “forced to his happiness”. Ultimately, Tuchel really wanted to sign a new “holding six” in the summer, but possible transfers like that of Joao Palinha fell through at the last minute. The 19-year-old Pavlovic then made his breakthrough at FC Bayern from his own youth and was even nominated for the German national team by national coach Julian Nagelsmann.
Speaking of Nagelsmann. Under the ex-Bayern coach, who was fired in March 2023, full-back Alphonso Davies played a key role as a left rail player. Under Tuchel, the Canadian has seemed inhibited for months and his development has stagnated. However, the unclear contract situation could also cause problems for Davies.

Cruel comparison between Tuchel and Nagelsmann speaks volumes
Even his friend Jamal Musiala couldn’t quite build on his splendid previous season when he shot Bayern to the championship title in the season finale. At that time, the dribbling artist had an impressive 32 scorer points, in the current season there are only 19 (as of April 30th).
The Mathys Tel case also provides a deep insight. After the attacking talent showed great promise in his first year at Bayern under Nagelsmann, he found himself almost exclusively on the bench under Tuchel. While Nagelsmann always talked strongly to the 19-year-old Frenchman, Tuchel mostly put him off with joker appearances. Due to the many injuries, Tel was recently allowed to start twice in a row and scored his sixth goal of the season in the Bundesliga in a 5-1 win against Union Berlin.
The point of contention Stanisic ruthlessly exposes Tuchel’s failure to act
The story about Josip Stanisic also makes Tuchel appear in a bad light compared to Nagelsmann. The Croatian international comes from Bayern’s youth team and recently celebrated the first German championship in the club’s history with Leverkusen as a loan player. Among other things, the controversial issue surrounding Josip Stanisic caused Tuchel to fall in Hoeneß’s favor.
Unforgettable: The 24-year-old defender showed a world-class performance against the offensive stars around Kylian Mbappé in the CL round of 16 last season against Paris Saint-Germain. Nagelsmann was fired before the quarter-finals. Homegrown player Stanisic suddenly no longer played a role under Tuchel and was sent away in the summer.
