Cologne’s relegation and the consequences – now the departure of coach Timo Schultz (46) is official!
BILD had already reported on Schultz’s impending departure a week ago. Seven days later, FC finally announced that Schultz, who had only taken over the job from Steffen Baumgart (52/HSV) in January, had to leave again after just 18 games.
Schultz: “Since we have not achieved our main goal – staying in the league – I believe it is consistent and right that someone else starts anew.”

The two assistant coaches André Pawlak (53) and Kevin McKenna (44) are also leaving the club.
Sports boss Christian Keller (45) says: “We deliberately took a lot of time last week to work through the second half of the season together with Timo and to turn over every stone. As a result, we were of the unanimous opinion that we must start the second division season, which comes with great challenges, with new impulses in the coaching team. I would like to thank Timo for his great commitment to the FC. As a coach and as a person, he gave his best for the FC from his first to his last day at work.”
“Schulle” himself would have liked to continue at FC (“I don’t have to tell anyone that FC is a great club”), but he doesn’t have a valid second division contract. Not everyone at Geißbockheim believes he can make a fresh start. The talks in the past few days have not changed that. Even if Keller is rumored to have initially had the idea of continuing with Schultz. The failed board led by President Werner Wolf (67) is said to have been against a future for Schultz.
Eichner successor?
It would have sent the wrong signal. Schultz had only won three games since taking up his post and thus missed the chance to save the team. The weak games against Darmstadt (0:2) and on the last matchday in Heidenheim (1:4) were particularly bitter.

The search for a new coaching staff should be completed by the start of preparations on June 21.
The hottest candidate to succeed Schultz is Karlsruhe’s Christian Eichner (45). The FC had already contacted him weeks ago (BILD reported exclusively). Eichner, who has a contract with KSC until 2025, could leave the club for around half a million euros due to an exit clause.
