Cleveland Cavaliers Fire Coach JB Bickerstaff after Playoff Elimination

A week after being eliminated in the second round of the NBA playoffs by the Boston Celtics, the Cleveland Cavaliers fired their coach, JB Bickerstaff, this Thursday.

The president of the Cavaliers, Koby Altman, justified Bickerstaff’s dismissal in a statement because the NBA “is a unique business that sometimes requires taking risky and aggressive measures for a franchise to advance and ultimately compete for the championship.”

Altman praised Bickerstaff, whom he described as “a respected NBA coach and an incredible human being” who in the four years he led the team improved his players.

The Cavaliers hired Bickerstaff, 45, in early 2020 to replace John Beilein and a year later agreed to a multi-year contract extension.

Under his direction, the Cavaliers have won 170 games and lost 159 in the regular season. Their record in the final phase of the championship is 6 wins and 11 losses.

Bickerstaff’s firing comes despite the fact that this season, for the first time since 2018, the Cavaliers passed the first round of the playoffs by beating the Orlando Magic. In the second round, the Celtics, the favorite team to win the championship this year, eliminated the Cavaliers in five games (4-1).
