THE NEW FORMAT OF THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE
From the 2024/25 season 36 clubs will participate in the league stage of the Champions League (formerly the group stage), giving four additional teams the opportunity to participate. These 36 clubs will participate in a single league in which the standings will include all 36 teams. According to the new format, teams will play eight matches in this new single group stage (formerly group stage). They will no longer play twice against three opponents – home and away – but will face eight different teams, playing half the games at home and half away. To determine the eight different opponents, the teams will initially be classified into four pots. Each team will then be drawn to play against two opponents per tier, playing one home match and one away match against the two teams in that tier.
HOW TO REACH THE DIRECT ELIMINATION PHASE
The results of each match will decide the general classification of the new championship, with three points for a win and one for a draw. The top eight teams in the championship phase will automatically qualify for the round of 16, while the teams ranked from 9th to 24th will compete in direct elimination play-offs with home and away matches to fill the grid for the round of 16. Teams finishing 25th or lower will be eliminated without access to the Europa League. In the knockout stage, teams ranked between 9th and 16th will be seeded in the knockout stage play-off draw, meaning they will face a team ranked between 17th and 24th playing ( in principle) the return home. The eight clubs that prevail in the play-offs for the knockout stage will advance to the round of 16 where they will face the top eight teams, who will in turn be seeded in the round of 16 draw. To strengthen the synergy between the championship and knockout phases, and to provide greater sporting stimulation during the championship phase, the knockout phase pairings will also be partly determined by the championship phase rankings, with a draw that will determine and it will also establish the teams’ path to reach the final. Starting from the round of 16, the competition will continue to follow its current format with knockout rounds leading up to the final which will be played as usual at a neutral venue selected by UEFA.
