Carlos Beltrán’s Kentucky Derby Fundraiser Success: Emotions, Auctions, and Surprises

Last Saturday there were many emotions in the city of Louisville, where the traditional Kentucky Derby took place and Mystik Dan won, beating Forever Young and Sierra Leone in the surprise victory.

From Puerto Rico, other emotions were also experienced when Fierceness competed, the favorite horse ridden by the member of the Equestrian Hall of Fame, the Puerto Rican John Velázquez, who unfortunately fell behind to fifteenth place.

The residence of former Puerto Rican baseball player Carlos Beltrán and his wife Jessica Lugo, in Dorado Beach East, served to hold a meeting to enjoy the sporting event, at the same time they raised funds that are destined for the Carlos Beltrán Baseball Academy.

Although they are still finalizing the numbers, according to the director of Carlos Beltrán’s foundation, Natalia Ferrer, she informed El Nuevo Día that around $210,000 was raised.

As a curious fact, the largest collection was 21 thousand dollars when the enjoyment of a suite at the José Miguel Agrelot Coliseum of Puerto Rico for the concert of the world-famous Puerto Rican urban exponent was sold as part of the live silent auction, Bad Bunny.

“The funds go to the academy to support scholarships and transportation that we provide to all students free of charge. The students come from 48 municipalities throughout Puerto Rico to the town of Florida, where the academy is located and, to achieve this, we have four routes,” Ferrer highlighted.

As reported, this is the first fundraising event they have held in the Beltrán house, so they did not know what to expect, being a small event in a house with 130 people.

“We are very happy with the results because the expenses were minimal. We spent 10 thousand dollars on the event and raised 210 thousand. In other words, the investment was minimal, since they also donated food and drinks to us,” he indicated about the activity, which had various sponsors, who paid for the ticket office and each one had their own guest list, in addition to neighbors of the Beltrán family. .

“The donations for the live silent auction were a success. We had a pike there, as obviously the reason was the Kentucky Derby, well we did it to help raise funds through this, and if you donated, you would participate to win a prize,” said the director, while repeating this and other types of similar events “because everyone loved it.”

During the afternoon, they broadcast the races live on the screen, with the surprise of speaking by videoconference with the Puerto Rican “jockey” who was racing that day.

“It was exciting for everyone to be able to meet him before he went to run his race, which was the most important thing. Since the event was so well received, I think we are going to repeat it next year and with other integrations,” he added.

Likewise, he stressed that the main reason why they were there was for the young people who belong to the academy, that there was even a performance that afternoon, when they came as volunteers to help in the event, being part of the registration, the auction and selling donations for the pica.

“More than anything they were there to recognize them. There was one who travels by bus from Mayagüez every day to the academy. He gets up between 3 and 4 in the morning. The parents take him to the stop, and it takes two hours there and back, which with traffic sometimes takes up to 3 hours. The commitment that this boy has had since he entered the academy, 4 years ago, doing that route every day is to be admired. That commitment is what motivates us to do all this work to raise funds to support them,” he gave as an example.
