The Eo River took a while but, finally, it has produced its first salmon of the season. He weighed just five kilos and was thrown ashore by an experienced fisherman: Victorino García “El Girafo”, 82 years old and born in Cornellana (Salas). In addition, this is the second campaign in his career, the first came in Narcea in 1992.
The rains of the last few hours caused a strong rise in the channel, which made it difficult to catch the long-awaited first salmon of the season in the Eo. It was in the Pozo Abraham, from the La Volta preserve in San Sebastian, shortly after one in the afternoon. García, who fishes with bait, took about twenty minutes to land the fish. He was not alone since he has been enjoying the Eo for two days in the company of his nephew José Antonio García.

“I caught it right away. It was difficult to get it out because the river is strong,” he says in the Xesteira refuge, where the catch was weighed. The Salense man relied on experience, since he has been fishing for many years: “Whoever goes to the river is to fish, if you don’t go to the river you don’t fish.” He caught many salmon in the Eo River throughout his life and confesses that it is a channel that he likes: “It is a very beautiful river, but there is a lack of salmon, there are none. I like it a lot, I have been coming all my life and I have fish a lot”.
The Salense fisherman debuted with a bell more than thirty years ago. It was in 1992 in Cornellana, when he brought ashore the first of that season, a ten and a half kilo specimen. He says that he sold it for half a million pesetas to the Cornellana Casino. Now he hopes to find a buyer for this second campaign.

For the guard who was in charge of sealing the animal, José González, the operation was new, since he confessed that it was the first time he had sealed a bell. It took more than a month for the Eo to produce its first salmon, since the season opened on April 14.
