The coaches of domestic Bundesliga football clubs have welcomed Ralf Rangnick’s remaining role as ÖFB team boss. Robert Klauß (Rapid), Peter Pacult (Austria Klagenfurt), Manfred Schmid (WAC), Thomas Silberberger (WSG Tirol) and Markus Schopp (Hartberg) rated Rangnick’s rejection of FC Bayern as positive for the further development of the Austrian national team.

Klauß, for example, who once worked with Rangnick at RB Leipzig, said: “I wanted him to stay because I think he’s in the right place here and feels comfortable.” Of course, the Bayern job would have been very attractive, “but I’m very happy that he made that decision, and I think everyone in the country is happy too.”

Silberberger made similar comments. “I think it’s great that he chose the ÖFB. That shows extreme strength of character. That’s why I think it’s cool that Ralf is going with the ÖFB national team in the next few years. Probably also because he has a lot of potential in the national team, similar to me.”

If Rangnick had preferred a move to Munich, it would have been fatal for the national team’s European Championship ambitions, Silberberger speculated. “I think then we would have had the same constellation as in 2018 in Spain, where the coach said shortly before the World Cup that he was moving to Real Madrid. Then you could see what the Spanish national team did on the pitch in Russia anyway.”

In the event of an early European Championship failure, “the discussion would certainly have been that the team boss is already mentally at Bayern Munich. Thank God we are spared this sword of Damocles and we can all look forward to a cool EURO together,” explained Silberberger.

Schmid spoke of a “very, very good decision for the national team. At the beginning of his era I said that we should let him work and give him time. He has already achieved a lot with a good team and I am glad that he is with the national team preserved.”

For Pacult, Rangnick’s stay in Austria didn’t come as a big surprise. “He had a current contract, it was clear to me that he would remain team boss. Anyone who knows Ralf knows that he doesn’t just give up and sticks to his word. He did a huge job,” emphasized the Viennese.

Schopp described Rangnick’s yes to the ÖFB team as an “extremely exciting decision for Austrian football, because Ralf Rangnick makes this decision carefully and of course he also has his reasons for saying no to a club like Bayern.” For Rangnick, the current ÖFB squad is apparently “a group of players that makes him dream of success, that also makes all of us who work in the profession dream.”
