Bundesliga: Bo Svensson becomes head coach of Union Berlin

1. FC Union Berlin has hired Bo Svensson as their new coach. As the Bundesliga club announced, the Dane succeeds Nenad Bjelica, who was released shortly before the end of the season, and interim coach Marco Grote. According to a statement, President Dirk Zingler said the decision was made to “restart sport in the summer.” As usual, the Berliners did not provide any information about the length of the contract.

“The unity that Union exudes, the unity between the team, fans, employees and club management, is a very important factor,” Svensson was quoted as saying. He will give everything “so that we have a successful season.”

Svensson was also considered Union’s preferred candidate due to his human and emotional nature: he takes over the team from the Berlin district of Köpenick at a sporting low point one year after qualifying for the Champions League. After a difficult season with two coaching changes and avoiding relegation at the last minute, the team lacks self-confidence.

Union will want to reduce the size of its relatively expensive squad and make it cheaper, as the club will not be playing internationally for the first time in three years next season. Unlike last year, personnel planning should be completed as early as possible.

As a player, Svensson won the Danish championship three times with FC Copenhagen. In Germany, he played for Borussia Mönchengladbach and 1. FSV Mainz 05. Between 2021 and 2023, he was head coach of Mainz.
