Brazil to Host Women’s Football World Cup: Historic Decision by FIFA

Brazil will host the Women’s Football World Cup. The Brazilian candidacy was preferred to the joint one of Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany, called “BNG”, during the vote held on Friday during the FIFA congress, world football body, in Bangkok, Thailand.

The joint candidacy of Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany and that of Brazil were the last two still in the running, after the withdrawal of Mexico and the United States, who also wanted to jointly organize the tournament.

This will be the first Women’s World Cup organized in South America. Brazil had already been the host country of the men’s tournament in 1950 and 2014.

The ten cities selected for the Brazilian candidacy all hosted matches at the 2014 World Cup. Nine stadiums will also be reused, with only the city of Sao Paulo offering a different venue. The legendary Maracana in Rio de Janeiro is scheduled for the opening match and the final.

Belgium hoped to organize a football World Cup, women’s and men’s tournaments combined, for the first time in its history. The men’s Euro 2000, co-organized with the Netherlands, remains the last major tournament organized on Belgian soil, which also hosted Euro 1972.

The last edition of the Women’s World Cup, in 2023, took place in Australia and New Zealand.
