BVB managing director Hans-Joachim Watzke praised the attacking midfielder as “one of the club’s greatest players”. “We wish Marco all the best for his future. We very much hope that he will return to BVB after his professional career, because there are enough exciting tasks waiting for him here in Dortmund,” said Watzke.

More than 400 games for Dortmund

Reus was a Borussia youth player from 1995 to 2005. This was followed by professional positions in Ahlen and at Borussia Mönchengladbach. In 2012, the Dortmund native returned to BVB. In 424 games so far, he has scored 168 goals for Dortmund and prepared 128 more goals. Reus scored 15 goals in 48 games for the German national team.

Reus said he was “incredibly grateful and proud” for his special time at Borussia Dortmund. “I spent more than half of my life in this club and enjoyed every day,” said Reus. It will be difficult for him to say goodbye at the end of the current Bundesliga season – “and yet I am glad that there is now clarity and that we can concentrate fully on the important final games that are still outstanding.” Reus thanked the BVB fans “for their incredible support over the years.”

Two-time Footballer of the Year in Germany

Reus reached the final of the Champions League with Dortmund in 2013 and won the DFB Cup twice. From 2018 to 2023 he was captain of the Dortmund team. In 2013 and 2019, Reus was voted Germany’s Footballer of the Year.

The midfielder’s career was marked by several serious injuries. He missed the 2014 World Cup in Brazil and the 2016 European Championships due to injuries. In the summer of 2017 he suffered a torn cruciate ligament and had to take a seven-month break.
