Borussia Dortmund bids farewell to club legend Marco Reus after twelve years

Borussia Dortmund said goodbye to a real club legend on Saturday, ex-captain Marco Reus will be leaving BVB after twelve years in the black and yellow jersey – Sebastian Kehl isn’t left indifferent by that either. “For the club it is also a moment in which you pause because such an extraordinary and deserving player is leaving,” said the BVB sports director in an interview with the Ruhr Nachrichten.

The two played together for Dortmund from 2012 to 2015, then Kehl ended his career. “These are not easy days. You realize what it all means at the end of such a time together,” explained Kehl. But he experiences Reus very focused.

After his last Bundesliga game for Dortmund, Reus also has a very special highlight coming up on June 1st: BVB will face Real Madrid in the Champions League final. “It would be great for everyone if we could crown this season for him and his career with this title at Wembley,” said Kehl. He and Reus were already very close to the handle pot in 2013. Back then, BVB lost against FC Bayern – also in the legendary London stadium.

The offensive player’s greatest successes are two triumphs in the DFB Cup (2017, 2021). Reus never became German champion – Dortmund failed dramatically on the last matchday in 2023 – and the 34-year-old also has unfinished business with the Champions League.

For Kehl, Reus is “one of the most outstanding players” the club has ever had. And even if the big successes in his career are (still) missing, he leaves BVB as a legend. “He will leave a gap,” said Kehl.
