Ralph Hasenhüttl had announced it: a chance for Wolfsburg’s talents on the last two match days. Dzenan Pejcinovic had to wait a long time, the last time he came on as a substitute was on matchday 20 in the 2-2 draw against Hoffenheim under former coach Niko Kovac. Now the reward for the young goalscorer, who scored 28 goals in 18 games in the U-19 Bundesliga. On Sunday in Munich (0:2) he was allowed on the field for Jonas Wind in the final minutes – a momentous substitution. According to kicker information, Pejcinovic broke his metatarsal.

It happened in the second minute of added time. Pejcinvoic comes to the ball near the halfway line and tries to maintain it in a duel with Dayot Upamecano. This is immediately followed by the grip on the left foot. The 19-year-old grits his teeth, hobbles across the field for the last two minutes, and immediately falls to his knees at the final whistle. The concern is already great. “He sprained his foot without any outside influence. It doesn’t look good,” said coach Ralph Hasenhüttl after the game, “we estimate that his metatarsal took some damage. It’s a shame for him.”

X-rays in Wolfsburg bring certainty

The X-rays on Monday morning in Wolfsburg provided confirmation: the foot is broken. The reward for his hard work over the past few months, his goals in the Wolfsburg youth team, turned into a serious injury. “I wanted to do something good for him,” emphasizes Hasenhüttl, “but that didn’t work.”

Pejcinovic could be loaned out in the summer

Bitter for the great talent. The only positive for Pejcinovic is the timing of the injury. The season is almost over, and there was no tournament in the summer for the junior national player (38 goals in 38 international matches for Germany). An operation is initially required for the teenager. And then vacation and rehab. Pejcinovic should be fit again by the start of the new season. Then in Wolfsburg? That is highly questionable. A loan is on the cards and there is no lack of interest in the striker. The injury shouldn’t change that.
