Benevento-Triestina, playoffs: do pre-tactics to hide dreams

For my first time at Ciro Vigorito of Benevento I choose to attend a match of great emotional impact, especially for the stakes. On the field for the first national round of the Serie C Playoffs, the hosts and Triestina will compete. The formula for these play-offs may be convoluted, the path may be long and tortuous but Serie B is still up for grabs, so even the most skeptical or pessimistic will most likely only be practicing pre-tactics with their most hidden dreams.

As soon as I enter the stadium doors, I realize how happy this choice was, since the scenic impact and the spectacle offered by the home fans is immediately extraordinary. I find them here, in their natural environment, after having already followed them away to Giugliano and I find them once again in good form, according to the enthusiasm they express in their choirs.

In the first half, however, I decide to position myself under the Triestina curve, I am very happy and curious at the same time to watch live the performance of this fan base that for geographical reasons I don’t have many opportunities to see: I am struck by their flags and see pieces of history up close, like the banner of Curva Furlan (accompanied by that of Nucleo San Giacomo and many other patches and banners), is part of that emotion that cannot be worn out by habit. The cheering and chanting to the rhythm of the drums never stops, contributing to an excellent performance in which they obviously don’t forget to honor the memory of Stefano Furlan. They also deserve applause from a numerical point of view, for the distance and difficult logistics overcome in order to support their shirt.

The match starts immediately with a bang, the visiting team takes the lead a few minutes after the kick-off, obviously arousing the enthusiasm of its away fans and encouraging their proud support for the cause. The disadvantage, however, instead of stunning, exalts Benevento who, in a short space of time, scores two goals and turns the dispute around, literally setting the stadium alight which is colored and lit up with the pyrotechnics of the curve. Just like the previous neighbors, the visiting fans did not let themselves be demoralized by the disadvantage, continuing to make themselves heard undaunted.

After seeing the beautiful initial score from the opposite perspective, in the second half I move under Sud Beneventana. Observing them from below offers several interesting ideas for my photographic eye and my lens. No less fascinating, however, is their cheering, with choreography, clapping and flags that lash the blanket of torches and smoke bombs. The advantage on the pitch predisposes them joyfully to cheering and being photographed; enthusiasm that will continue even after the referee’s final whistle, which confirms the victory of Benevento by 2 to 1. By virtue of the 1 to 1 at the “Nereo Rocco” in the first leg, it is the Giallorossi who snatch the pass for the second round and fuel the hope of the much coveted return to the cadetship.
