On May 24, the 2024 “Belt and Road” Youth Sports Exchange Week (Jiangsu) kicked off at Luoma Lake in Suqian. More than 400 international youths from nearly 60 countries and regions living in Jiangsu traveled around Jiangsu with sports as the medium amidst the green mountains and clear waters.

The theme of this exchange week is “Blooming Youthful Beauty, Forging Jiangsu Love”. It will be held in Suqian from May 24 to June 3. It will carry out a series of youth sports and cultural exchange activities such as the 2024 “Belt and Road” International Youth Men’s 3×3 Basketball Invitational Tournament, the “Belt and Road” Youth Outdoor Sports Challenge, and the “Belt and Road” International Youth Orienteering Training Camp. The contestants will be selected through registration by various universities in the early stage. Among them, the “Belt and Road” Youth Outdoor Sports Challenge has set up trendy projects such as frisbee, hiking, beach volleyball, beach football, etc. that are popular among young people today, and are widely popular among international young friends.

The “Belt and Road” Youth Sports Exchange Week (Jiangsu) is one of the important brand activities of Jiangsu’s “Belt and Road” cultural exchange. It has been successfully held for four sessions so far, attracting more than 1,000 young friends from countries and regions that jointly build the “Belt and Road” who work and study in Jiangsu. Dila, a senior student majoring in political science and administration at Southeast University, is from Pakistan. He has lived in China for 16 years and speaks standard Chinese. “I am an avid basketball fan. I have participated in three exchange week activities. Through playing basketball, I have met many friends who study in Jiangsu like me and like sports. We exchange the culture of our respective countries and also exchange Chinese culture. This is my first time in Suqian. I will continue to participate in the 3×3 basketball invitational tournament this year. Competition is not the most important thing. Friendship is the most important thing.”

It is worth mentioning that, unlike the opening ceremony in the gymnasium in previous years, this year’s exchange week held the opening ceremony in the scenic area for the first time. The following series of events and cultural exchange activities will also visit scenic spots such as Luoma Lake in Suqian, Santaishan, and Xiang Wang’s hometown. While showing their youthful vitality and style, young people from China and foreign countries will also experience a feast of sports and tourism integration. Young people from various countries have expressed their expectation to travel with the event, check in Jiangsu, and feel China. The international student from Huaiyin Institute of Technology from Cameroon gave himself a Chinese name called “Bayi”. At the opening ceremony, he conquered many audiences with a song “You Raise Me Up”. “I like China and have made many friends through the exchange week before. I have been to Nanjing, Xuzhou, Huai’an and other cities in Jiangsu. This is my first time in Suqian. I like the scenery of Luoma Lake very much. I also hope to go to other cities in Jiangsu next and introduce Jiangsu cities and Chinese culture to my family and friends.” At the end of the opening ceremony, it was sunset, and many young friends walked to the lake and picked up their mobile phones to record the beautiful scenery of Luoma Lake.

Sports bring people together, culture builds bridges. The Belt and Road Youth Sports Exchange Week has built a window of friendship for young friends from all over the world to exchange culture, perceive China, feel Jiangsu, and broaden their horizons. Through sports and exchange activities, young friends also spread Chinese stories and Chinese culture to more distant places. Fan Jinhua, a second-level inspector of the Jiangsu Provincial Sports Bureau, told reporters: “This year’s exchange week has added local cultural experience links on the basis of the original three projects. For example, in Suqian, the venue of this year’s event, young friends can experience local cultural characteristics such as paper cutting, so that young people from all countries can fully experience the charm of Jiangsu culture, take this opportunity to learn more about Jiangsu, understand Chinese culture, like Chinese culture, and contribute youthful strength to the development and construction of the Belt and Road.”

This exchange week is guided by the Foreign Sports Exchange Center of the State Sports General Administration and the Office of the Leading Group for Promoting the Construction of the Belt and Road Initiative of Jiangsu Province, and hosted by the Jiangsu Provincial Sports Bureau, Jiangsu Provincial Department of Education, Jiangsu Provincial Foreign Affairs Office, and Suqian Municipal Government.
