Bayern Leverkusen goes 50th game without defeat by beating Bochum (5-0)

Leverkusen panics the counters. With 87 points, Xabi Alonso’s men maintain their 15 point lead over Bayern Munich, winner on their Wolfsburg pitch (2-0). If they beat Augsburg next weekend on the 34th and final day of the Bundesliga, they will even reach the second best points total behind Jupp Heynckes’ Bayern Munich’s 91 points during the 2012-13 season.

The Werkself (the “factory eleven”, nickname of the club team founded in 1904 by the chemist Bayer) can above all become the first club in the Bundesliga to complete a season without the slightest defeat.

Since 1945 and in the five major European championships (England, Germany, Spain, France, Italy), only four clubs have achieved such a feat: Perugia (30 matches in 1978-79, 2nd at the end of the season), AC Milan (34 in 1991-92), Juventus Turin (38 in 2011-12) and Arsenal (38 in 2003-04). In Germany, Bayern finished two seasons with a single defeat: in 1986-87 and 2012-13.

Tripled more relevant than ever

After this 50th match of the season, in all competitions (33 in the Bundesliga, 5 in the Cup and 8 in the Europa League) without defeat, Leverkusen still has three matches to play to make the season perfect with a treble still within reach: Saturday May 18 at home against Augsburg in the league, on Wednesday May 22 in Dublin in the final of the Europa League against Atalanta Bergamo then on Saturday May 25 in Berlin in the final of the German Cup against Kaiserslautern.

In numerical superiority against Bochum from the 15th minute of play after the exclusion of Felix Passlack, Bayer Leverkusen opened the scoring through Patrik Schick (41st minute) and doubled the lead through Victor Boniface (45th + 2) from the penalty spot. In the second half, Amine Adli (76th) and Josip Stanisic (86th) added to the score. And in added time, Leverkusen scored their 5th goal through Alejandro Grimaldo.

In Munich, Bayern turned around, four days after their elimination in the semi-final of the Champions League against Real Madrid, but easily won against Wolfsburg, to enter the final day in second place with two points. lead over Stuttgart, and a largely favorable goal difference (+51 against +35).

The place of runner-up is not only symbolic since if Leverkusen succeeds in the Championship/German Cup double, it is the 2nd in the Bundesliga that it will face in August in the Super Cup.
