Bergamo, which is certainly qualified for the Champions League, is considered an extremely unpleasant opponent. In the round of 16 two years ago, the Lombards won both games against Bayer. In the current competition, they eliminated Liverpool FC, among others, and thus denied coach Jürgen Klopp a farewell game on the international stage. AS Roma coach Daniele De Rossi said after the semi-final defeat against Bayer: “If there is a team that can hold a candle to Leverkusen in terms of physicality, structure and attitude, it is Gasperinis (Bergamo coach, editorial team) Atalanta.“

The day before the game, however, this apparently did not inspire much respect in the Bayer team. When asked at the press conference why everyone seemed so relaxed, Leverkusen midfield star Granit Xhaka replied with a wink: “We drink blood every morning.”

Wirtz will be able to play for Leverkusen

12,000 Bayer fans are on their way to Dublin. 9,000 Tifosi come from Bergamo, including mayor Giorgio Cori. The duel between Atalanta Bergamo and Bayer Leverkusen offers an interesting fact: it is the final in a European competition in which the participants come from cities with the smallest population in the history of the European Cup. Bergamo has 121,000 inhabitants and Leverkusen 165,748.

Leverkusen manager Simon said: “It was good that he came in for half an hour against Augsburg. It’s getting better every day. He was able to recharge his batteries in the phase beforehand. He goes into the two finals in top shape. And in the end we need him too.” With eleven goals and eleven assists in the championship season, coach Xabi Alonso would certainly have been reluctant to do without him.
