Baskets got off to a furious start

Die Baskets Bonn got off to a furious start and immediately got into the game. The hosts visibly impressed Ludwigsburg with an early 7-0 run. Even though the guests also made it onto the scoreboard, Bonn remained clearly dominant. A three-pointer from Brian Fobbs brought the spectators in the Hardtberg hall out of their seats, the Baskets suddenly led 21:4 – the giants were overrun in the first eight minutes.

On the other hand, there was hardly anything going on for the guests; the throwing rate was less than 10 percent. The Rhinelanders showed themselves completely differently and celebrated a real basket festival, especially from beyond the three-point line – the rate from a distance was 67 percent. The score went into the first quarter break at 32:13.

Fobbs and Watson best players

In the second half of the game, the guests got into the game a little better, but were at best able to keep up better against strong hosts. However, this was more due to the fact that Bonn couldn’t quite maintain its phenomenal rate of throws. Nevertheless, the Baskets continued to extend their lead – Ludwigsburg called a timeout three minutes before the break.

However, this had no effect and Ludwigsburg continued to be subterranean on the offensive. Bonn looked significantly fresher and showed no weaknesses. Watson and Fobbs in particular remained unstoppable. We went into the break with a more than clear lead at 51:25.

Ludwigsburg only dominated in the third quarter

The second half of the game started almost like the first: in just over 60 seconds, the Baskets got off to a furious start again. Two converted three-pointers from Ludwigsburg at least suggested that the guests wanted to pull themselves together again. The giants now increased their throwing rate, but Bonn continued to hold up well. This only made the lead a little smaller – coach Roel Moors didn’t like that and took a time out.

But as with their opponents in the second quarter, the timeout had little effect: the giants now performed better than Bonn. Little by little they reduced the huge gap, which was now 30 points. The final section started with a 15 point lead.

Baskets now against ALBA in the quarterfinals

Savion Flagg opened this with a three-pointer for the Baskets, Fobbs followed up with the next throw from outside. Bonn once again went on a 6-0 run at the start of the period – and again MHP coach Josh King called his timeout early. Bonn now defended better again and kept the lead at around 20 points. The guests were increasingly running out of time for the comeback – and mistakes kept creeping up in good attacking situations.

Ultimately, the burden was too high for the giants after their poor performance in the first half. The Bonn team will now face ALBA Berlin, the runner-up in the BBL main round, in the quarter-finals of the playoffs. Berlin initially has home advantage on Friday (May 17th, 2024) at 6:30 p.m.
