Basketball Bundesliga Playoffs: Sports Psychologist Shares Golden Rules for Success

Now it’s time! Final spurt in the Easycredit Basketball Bundesliga. The next five days will be about play-offs, play-ins and relegation. And every coach hopes that after nine months of work, his team will perform at its best NOW.

Renate Eichenberger (51) knows how to do this. The sports psychologist looked after Alba Berlin for seven years, during which time she won two championships (2020, 2022). The Swiss woman, who lives in the capital, supports the Veolia Towers Hamburg and the Union Berlin footballers with advice and support.

From her years of working with competitive athletes, Eichenberger has learned: “There are no coincidences. It all starts with the psyche.”

In SPORT BILD she explains the golden rules for sporting success!

“Trust is one of the key words,” says the Geneva native. “Without trust, nothing works. If I haven’t built at least a basic level of trust in my team, why should I pass the ball to my teammate?”

There is also a clear distribution of roles – and a common goal to which everyone is committed. “It’s about each individual thinking: What are the things that you can bring to the next game so that this team can be successful? It starts with me. And if all five people on the field do that, then nothing can go wrong. Because even if you lose, you can say: We gave what we could.”

Then there can be a bang in the cabin: “At the same time, if things don’t go well, it’s important to be able to endure conflicts,” emphasizes the book author. “It doesn’t mean that everything is a pony farm. No! There is also friction.”

How the team deals with setbacks is also crucial. “First of all, it is important to note that a season always runs in waves,” emphasizes the former gymnast and triathlete. “If everything goes well, many people have the feeling that this is now the status quo that they can maintain until the play-offs. But that’s wishful thinking.”

But continuity is just as important: “It’s often the case in sport that if things don’t go well, everything is thrown out the window. No! You have to trust the process. And Benka Barloschky, for example, often emphasized this at the Towers at the beginning of the season. We trust. And I also know how that arrived. Not everyone could understand it. And then suddenly you were performing.”

Last but not least, all teams have to deal with pressure, especially at the end of the season. Eichenberger: “For example, if you reach the play-offs and you didn’t even think about it at the beginning. Then I could think: Now you really have to perform again. No! Rather, it’s important to classify it realistically: Hey, we’ve worked on a lot. From here, what are the things we are confident of doing? And don’t have the feeling that the championship has to be won right now. Often you suddenly have the feeling that now only the big things count. And then the pressure becomes immense.”
