Babangida makes himself heard in a video message after great action by Vitesse and Ajax

Tijjani Babangida thanked Vitesse and Ajax in a video for their expression of support prior to their mutual Eredivisie match in Arnhem on Sunday. The fifty-year-old former Eredivisie player was seriously injured in a car accident earlier this month, while his younger brother and son died. Vitesse and Ajax supported Babangida on Sunday with a large banner.
The car accident took place in Nigeria, on the highway from Kaduna to Zaria. The one-year-old son of Tijjani Babangida and his brother Ibrahim, a former FC Volendam player, were killed. Tijjani Babangida and his wife were seriously injured.
Ajax and Vitesse are two clubs where Tijjani Babangida played in the past, and that is why both clubs decided to support him on Sunday. Before Vitesse – Ajax, all players had their picture taken with a large banner, with the text ‘Baba, good luck!’ was standing.
Babangida made himself heard in a video message a day later. “Hello Ajax. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for the show of love towards me and my family prior to the match against Vitesse yesterday (Sunday, ed.).”
“The whole world has been watching and I am very happy. It makes me strong. I want to take this opportunity to thank you, and also the other people in the Netherlands, for the compassion they have shown to me and my family. Very much thank you,” said the Nigerian international.
Roda JC Kerkrade picked up Babangida from Nigeria in 1991. The right winger then spent another season on loan for VVV-Venlo, before earning a transfer to Ajax in 1996.
Ultimately, he played 102 official matches on behalf of the Amsterdam team. In the 2001/02 season he was loaned to Vitesse.
