Atlantic Slam W: NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament Coming to Prince Edward Island

A major National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) American women’s college basketball tournament will take place in Prince Edward Island. The Atlantic Slam W will be contested from November 22 to 24 at the Eastlink Center in Charlottetown.

Four American teams will participate in the tournament, including the University of Mississippi Ole Miss Rebels and the Georgetown University Hoyas. The other two will be revealed later in 2024.

The six Atlantic Slam W matches will count towards the NCAA regular season scoring, the highest level of intercollegiate competition in the United States.

Veteran sports commentator Rod Black made the announcement during a press conference at the provincial capital’s city hall. He will be part of the broadcast team during the tournament which will be televised on ESPN in the United States and TSN in Canada.

This is the second time the NCAA has hosted basketball games in the Atlantic. Last year, the Atlantic Slam took place in Moncton for the men’s teams.

An opportunity for tourism

American college basketball is very popular. Tens of millions of viewers watch the NCAA men’s and women’s March Madness national championships each year.

Holding the tournament fits well with the strategic plans of Charlottetown and the province to promote tourism.

The manager of events and tourism management for the City of Charlottetown, Laurel Lea, also hopes that young female athletes will be inspired.

It is essential for our young female athletes in the region to be able to project themselves into this type of high-level tournament, she explains. Men’s sports get a lot of attention, but the visibility of women’s sports is increasing around the world and we are finally being shown the value that these extraordinary athletes bring to the world of sports.

Several activities alongside the event will be announced later.

Passes for the Atlantic Slam W tournament are on sale starting at 11 a.m. Thursday on the Eastlink Center website.
