Astros Outslug Yankees with Power-Hitting Display

NEW YORK – Yordan Alvarez and Jon Slingleton each homered in the first inning, and the Houston Astros defeated the New York Yankees 4-3 on Thursday night, avoiding being swept.

Alvarez hit a solo home run off Marcus Stroman (2-2) to the second balcony. The ball left Alvarez’s bat at a speed of 116.8 miles per hour.

Two batters later, Singleton hit a resounding home run that hit the face of the third balcony into the right field stands, a result rarely seen at Yankee Stadium.

Houston (13-24) becomes the first team to hit two homers with a velocity measured at 115 mph or more since Statcast was introduced in 2015.

Jeremy Pena provided two hits, including a productive single in the fifth inning, for the Astros who had lost their first six duels of the campaign against the Bronx Bombers (40-18 in cumulative points).

Anthony Volpe brought the Yankees closer with a two-run slap against starter Ronel Blanco (4-0) in the third inning, and Aaron Judge stood out with a 473-foot bomb against reliever Ryan Pressly in the eighth inning.

Endgame specialist Josh Hader, however, closed the door by getting the last four outs. It was his fourth save of the season.
