Astonishing Coach Swap: Savior Fired – Relegated Team Hired!

Ingo Freyer (53) saved the MLP Academics from relegation. The head fireman of the Easycredit Basketball Bundesliga achieved this feat for the third time in a row! But as was the case with the EWE Baskets Oldenburg and the Syntainics MBC, his contract was not renewed after the rescue.

“The ideas of long-term cooperation on both sides were too far apart,” said Heidelberg boss Matthias Lautenschläger, explaining the dismissal this time.

But the choice of Freyer’s successor is surprising. Because Heidelberg prefers to bet on a relegated team! The man that Freyer left behind…

The Academics’ new coach will be Danny Jansson (44) from the Tigers Tübingen! The Finn is leaving the eighteenth-placed team after four years and is signing a two-year contract with an option for another season!

Astonishing coach swap: Savior fired – relegated team hired!

Jansson had only extended his contract in Tübingen until 2025 in December. However, thanks to a relegation clause, he can leave on a free transfer on June 30th.

For Heidelberg’s sporting director Alex Vogel, Jansson is “the ideal candidate”. The club’s press release states: “Danny plays a very team-oriented and attractive style of basketball. He has shown in the past that he can develop and improve players. The fact that Tübingen was fighting to avoid relegation until the last week, given the financial circumstances, was equally impressive.”

Jansson began as a youth coach in the junior ranks of Ratiopharm Ulm, was twice “Coach of the Year” in the ProA and later led Tübingen into the first league.

Lautenschläger: “I noticed the extremely attractive and team-oriented playing style of the Tübingen team two and a half years ago, which is why I drove to Tübingen to watch a ProA game of the Tigers. The way Danny coaches fascinated me then and still does today. We want to build something together with him over the coming years. He is not a coach who guarantees short-term success, but he has proven to be able to develop teams and young players enormously.”

Block monster leaves Löwen Braunschweig

Setback for the Braunschweig Lions. Crowd favorite Jilson Bango (25) is leaving! The BBL block monster is moving to the top European league ACB in Spain. Twelfth-placed Zaragoza is buying the Angolan national player out of his current contract.

Already in the middle of the season, the first inquiries for the 2.08 meter tall center came in. Löwen managing director Nils Mittmann: “We already knew at that point that we probably wouldn’t be able to keep Jilson after this season.” Braunschweig has the smallest budget in the BBL.

Oldenburg holt College-Boy

After the disappointing exit in the first play-in round, the EWE Baskets Oldenburg have their first new player. The 2.01 meter tall Kyle Rode (24) comes straight from Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia. The winger was a captain in college and is the second best three-point shooter in the history of the Flames with a hit rate of 42.5 percent.

Coach Pedro Calles (40) has good experience in bringing players straight from college to the BBL. Center Maik Kotsar (27) was a huge hit with Veolia Towers Hamburg. The Estonian now plays in the Euroleague for Baskonia/Spain.

Deane Williams (27), on the other hand, has to go. The Englishman was out for a long time with a calf injury and was never able to find his top form again.

Bamberg loses top scorer

The Bamberg Baskets and their new coach Anton Gavel (39) are about to completely rebuild. Top scorer Zach Copeland (26) is playing for the Vancouver Bandits in Canada over the summer. After that, the shooting guard (17.7 points per game) will not return to the nine-time champions!

Copeland moves to Italian first division club Napoli and signs until 2026.

Vechta extends with promotion hero

Ryan Schwieger (25/USA) is currently still suffering from the effects of his second concussion of the past season. Now there is good news for the 2023 promotion hero: Rasta has extended his contract for another season. Talent Luc van Slooten (22) is also allowed to stay. The club announced this at the end of the season.
