Aston Villa has not yet secured Champions League football, but is very close. A crazy home match against Liverpool ended in 3-3. Villa now has to get a point in the last match, or can qualify without playing if Tottenham Hotspur does not beat Manchester City tomorrow.

Villa will play their last league match against Crystal Palace. Liverpool had already qualified for the Champions League, but has no chance of winning the title. The Reds had Virgil van Dijk and Cody Gakpo in the starting line-up.

Villa started dramatically. After barely a minute the ball was already in. A deflected cross from Harvey Elliott was cleverly turned into his own goal by goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez. After four minutes it was almost 0-2 after a dangerous shot from Mo Salah.

Liverpool also became threatening a number of times due to carelessness at the back of Villa. But instead of a second goal for Jurgen Klopp’s team, it became 1-1 after twelve minutes. Youri Tielemans finished off a low cross from Ollie Watkins in a controlled manner.

Gakpo accurate

After 22 minutes it was Liverpool who scored again. Gakpo easily tapped in a cross from Joe Gomez, but did not cheer exuberantly. He may have feared that the VAR would disallow his goal, but after a long check it turned out that there was no offside. Reason for Gakpo to still raise his fist in the air.

After 35 minutes it should have been level again, but Diego Carlos missed an excellent opportunity to the dismay of his coach Unai Emery.

Shortly after the break, Liverpool made it 1-3. The young Jarell Quansah, who stood next to Van Dijk in the center of the defense, headed in beautifully from Elliott’s free kick. Then it was up to Villa to score again. Watkins did so, but VAR canceled the goal for offside.

Durán Durán

Ryan Gravenberch was allowed to come on twenty minutes before the end for Liverpool, who seemed to win comfortably. But Jhon Durán completely restored the tension five minutes before the end by shooting Villa to 2-3.

Just two minutes later, substitute Durán also ran into Moussa Diaby’s failed cross with his knee and the comeback was complete: 3-3.

No more goals were scored in the nine minutes of injury time, so Villa must wait at least another day to know for sure whether the club will enter the Champions League.
