AS Saint-Étienne Set to Change Ownership: Canadian Group to Take Over

While the sale of AS Saint-Étienne had resurfaced several days ago with information from Bernard Lions of The Teamthe Saint-Etienne club officially communicated yesterday at the end of the afternoon: “After more than twenty years at the head of AS Saint-Étienne, Bernard Caïazzo and Roland Romeyer decided to sell the club to new shareholders committed to building on their vision and accelerating the development of the club. To ensure an ambitious future for the club, their objective is to put ASSE in the hands of a trusted, experienced and financially solid player. After several weeks of discussions, ASSE shareholders announced today that they have entered into exclusive negotiations with the president of Kilmer Sports Ventures Ivan Gazidis with a view to proceeding with the sale of all of the shares of ASSE Groupe. Kilmer Sports Ventures is a Canadian family group owned by Larry Tanenbaum. The sale must be ratified in the coming weeks, once the information and consultation obligations of stakeholders and competent authorities have been completed..”

Announced for sale for several years now, the Saint-Etienne club seems closer than ever to changing ownership. Bernard Caïazzo et Roland Romeyer should therefore sell the club to the Canadian group Kilmer Sports Ventures belonging to Larry Tanenbaum and whose general director is Ivan Gazidisincluding Arsenal and AC Milan. The Team, RMC Sport and the Progress reveal to us the first outlines of this project carried out by Ivan Gazidis. The latter will therefore be the new president of AS Saint-Étienne but will not be present daily in the city. It will be represented by Huss Fahmy former director of football at Arsenal, and Jaeson Rosenfeld, data specialist. This buyout will not be carried out by an investment fund but with the own capital of Kilmer Sports Venture belonging to the billionaire Larry Tanenbaum. If there was talk of an association with American-Chinese funds, this will ultimately not be the case. The Canadian group will take on AS Saint-Étienne alone and there is no question of multiple ownership, in the short term at least.

Ivan Gazidis does not initially aim to bring about a major revolution at AS Saint-Étienne. Not yet knowing the local context, the daily management of the club should initially remain in the hands of Jean-François Soucasse. Loïc Perrin could also continue his missions, supported by the two men close to Gazidis mentioned above, Huss Fahmy et Jaeson Rosenfeld. Concerning the sporting model advocated by Gazidisthis is the one used by his former club AC Milan: relying on young people with high potential, supervised by experienced players.

And The Team initially announced that Bernard Caïazzo could remain a very minority shareholder of the Saint-Etienne club, this would ultimately not be the case according to RMC Sport. The national media announces that Kilmer Sports Ventures will buy 100% of the shares of ASSE Groupe, Roland Romeyer et Bernard Caïazzo will therefore no longer have any participation in the club. However, the first will remain the president of ASSE Coeur-Vert and will keep seats reserved for him and his family at the Geoffroy-Guichard stadium.

Finally, if this has been mentioned for almost two years now with relegation to Ligue 2, the club should ultimately not have a social plan, whether the club moves back to Ligue 1 or remains in Ligue 2. The sources agree on the fact that the sale could be completed at the end of May to best prepare for next season. If the sale of AS Saint-Étienne has been the subject of much discussion for several years now, the Saint-Etienne club has never been so close to changing hands.
