A man has been arrested near Bordeaux for possible involvement in planning a “violent action” during the Olympic flame’s journey through Bordeaux this afternoon. The French Minister of the Interior reports this on X.

Minister Darmanin praises the security officials “who ensure that this popular event can take place safely.

French media write that the suspect was arrested last Tuesday just outside the southern French city. It concerns a 26-year-old man who sympathizes with the incel movement. Incel stands for involuntary celibate: involuntary celibate, someone who does not have sex, but wants to. The incel movement has grown into a radicalizing internet subculture dominated by misogyny.

It is not clear why the man would target it at this event.

The Olympic flame arrived in France by ship from Greece more than two weeks ago. From the arrival point of Marseille, the flame slowly moves towards Paris, where the Olympic Games will be held from July 26. About 10,000 torchbearers are involved in the 12,000 kilometer relay that ends during the opening ceremony of the Games.
