April Success: Papendallers Shine at Tournaments with Olympic Tickets Secured

In April our Papendallers achieved fantastic success at tournaments. From winning medals at the European and World Championships to securing important tickets for the Olympic Games in Paris. April was a month with great achievements and highlights. Curious about which medals have been won and who can go to Paris? Read on quick!

Medals at the Badminton European Championships
The European Badminton Championships took place from April 8 to 14 in Saarbrücken (Germany). The mixed doubles duos Selena Piek & Robin Tabing and Deborah Jille & Cheryl Seinen managed to win a bronze medal at this tournament. Unfortunately, both duos were eliminated in the semi-finals. Deborah and Cheryl kept up well with their opponent (French couple) in the first set, but after the 15-15 score they were no longer able to score any points. In the second set it became a walkover. The match also had an extra meaning for Cheryl. It was her last match as a professional badminton player.

Badminton players Robin Tabing and Selena Piek have qualified for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris this summer during the European Championships. By reaching the semi-finals of the mixed doubles and losing their competition at the Asian Championships, things were clear for the duo.

Even more Olympic tickets
The handball players have qualified for the Olympic Games for the third time in a row. At the Olympic qualifying tournament in Spain, the handball ladies recorded a second victory over the Czech Republic. Because of that victory and Argentina’s defeat, the Netherlands was assured of a place in the top two. And that means a ticket to Paris!

In addition to the women’s wheelchair basketball, the men’s wheelchair basketball will also go to the Olympic Games. In the Paralympic qualifying tournament, the Netherlands was too strong for Colombia in the decisive match. It is now the tenth time that the men have gone to the Games. Three years ago the men were not there in Tokyo, but luckily they made it again this year!

Tristan Tulen, fencer, managed to grab the very last chance to go to the Olympic Games. It had to happen at the Olympic qualifying tournament in Luxembourg. A tournament with 31 participants, where only the winner earned an Olympic ticket. A lot of tension and pressure as favorite for the win, but Tristan did it! In the final he won 15-6 against the Portuguese Miguel Frazao, to whom he had lost in Budapest last month.

European Judo Championship medals
The European Judo Championships took place in Zagreb (Croatia) from April 25 to 28. Joanne van Lieshout won a silver medal at her first European Championship final. A great achievement for the only 21-year-old judoka. Frank de Wit also managed to reach the final by eliminating reigning champion Vedat Albayrak from Turkey in the semi-finals. Unfortunately, his opponent in the final was too strong, but no one can take his first European Championship medal from him. Michael Korrel, 2022 European champion, won a bronze medal in the 100kg class. He managed to beat the number two in the world, Zelim Kotsoiev from Azerbaijan.

Twice gold for Niek Kimmann and silver for Manon Veenstra
The UCI BMX Racing World Cup took place in Tulsa, America, on April 27 and 28. Niek managed to come first on both Saturday and Sunday and that is of course a great achievement! Niek has now won 15 world victories in his career. Manon also managed to win a medal in Tulsa. On Saturday she finished in second place.
