Athletics stars Julian Weber and Malaika Mihambo celebrated victories in their performances at the Anhalt Meeting in Dessau. Gina Lückenkemper canceled her start in the final 100 meters at short notice.

European javelin champion Julian Weber made a statement at his start to the season in Dessau. The 29-year-old from Mainz threw 88.37 m in his third attempt at the meeting in Saxony-Anhalt and ended the competition early, “extremely happy”. Weber had recently taken a break due to an adductor strain, but still thought he was in the “best shape” of his life. He confirmed this with his victory in Dessau. The Egyptian Khaliq Mustafa in second place was well behind (81.92). Max Dehning (Leverkusen), who threw over 90 m in February, came in third (81.78), and Rio Olympic champion Thomas Röhler (Jena) came in sixth (78.15).

Mihambo makes half a dozen

Olympic champion Malaika Mihambo has won the long jump competition for the sixth time in a row. The 30-year-old from LG Kurpfalz jumped 6.79 meters in her last attempt and thus won a difficult competition ahead of Natalie Linares from Colombia with 6.72 meters and Mikaelle Assani from SCL Heel Baden-Baden with 6.65 meters. Mihambo and Assani have already met the standard for the Olympic Games in Paris.

Lückenkemper foregoes final

In the women’s 100 metres, spectators were looking forward to the final with European champion Gina Lückenkemper, who had won her heat with 11.14 seconds. However, the athlete from SCC Berlin decided not to take part in the final because the track was too wet, so as not to risk injury before the upcoming European Championships in Rome (7th – 12th June) and the Olympic Games in Paris (26th July – 11th August). The winner of the final was Gina Bass from Gambia with 11.09 seconds.

Krause had to cancel at short notice

Gesa Felicitas Krause, who was originally scheduled to compete in the 3000 meter steeplechase, had to cancel her start at short notice due to a difficult dental operation, according to the organizers. The former European champion qualified for the Olympics straight away on her international comeback after her maternity leave a few weeks ago.
